How can the Group help me?
The basic objective of the Group is to provide guidance and advice - given by Observers (these are volunteers who have not only passed their IAM Advanced Test, but have also completed further training, enabling them to offer guidance) - to help you to improve your driving or riding to a standard, which will allow you to take and pass the IAM Advanced Test.  The Group covers the area of South Lincolnshire including Boston, Spalding, Holbeach, Long Sutton, Sleaford, Spilsby and Skegness (see map below) and we cover both cars and motorcycles.

How much does it cost?
The route to the IAMs Advanced Test is through the IAM 'Skill for Life' package which includes all of the following items:-

  • Membership for one year of our Group to receive FREE guidance in preparing for the IAM Advanced Test (though it should take a lot less time than that).
  • The IAM Manual ('How to be an Advanced Driver/Rider').
  • The IAM Advanced Test Fee.
  • IAM Associate status, with an automatic upgrade to full Membership of the IAM (upon passing the Advanced Driving/Motorcyclists Test within 12 months).
  • Advanced Driving - the IAM's tri-annual Members magazine.
  • Access to the members area of the IAM Website, with details of Members' Events, Membership Services and Special Offers.

All of this costs just £99 for cars and £109 for bikes.

If you are 25 or under, you can buy "Skill for Life" for £20 off the normal price, which is automatically calculated when you apply

Preparation for the Advanced Test is conducted by volunteers in your local IAM Group. On completing your purchase online of "Skill for Life", you will be put in touch with your local IAM Group. Each group organises their "Observed Runs" locally. Most people can achieve "Test standard" after 6-8 observed runs (typically a fortnight apart), so you could be "Test ready" in 12-16 weeks.

Please read the "Skill for Life" Terms & Conditions before purchasing.

Once you have received your 'Skill for Life' pack, then please contact us direct to arrange starting as soon as possible on our 'Skill for Life' programme.

If you are not sure that advanced driving/riding is for you then you can try it for yourself before committing to a fuller involvement. DriveCheck and RideCheck assessments are available giving you a taste of what advanced driving and riding is all about.

How does the Group Operate?
Observed runs for Associates (drivers and riders preparing for their IAM Advanced Test) are carried out on a one to one basis with an allocated Observer (volunteers who have not only passed their IAM tests, but have also completed further training, enabling them to offer guidance). They take place at mutually convenient times for both people.  The test may be booked when the Observer and Chief Observer agree that the Associate has reached the required test standard.

Monthly Social Meetings are held on the fourth Monday in the month at the Wyberton Sports and Social Club, Causeway, Wyberton, Boston, or at other venues where outside visits or events may be scheduled.  Some recent events have included visits to the Hospital Radiology Dept, a local garage and the Fire Station.

Group members and guests are always welcome at these events.
